We were talking about what we could pitch in and do for our community when we realized that what we take for granted at our martial arts studio – the incredible diversity, friendly inclusive community, respectful attitude, non-macho or aggressive environment, are not necessarily the norm. We are a gay, woman-owned Muay Thai (Thai kickboxing) school in the middle of NYC where the members range from 14-60+, about half male/female and members of all races and professions. We are very serious about our martial art and practice traditional Muay Thai with a focus on correct technique, with an active and very competitive fight team (around 25 team members) but the majority of our members (100+) are there for fitness, self-defense or just plain fun.
We are planning to hold one-off self-defense classes in the near future as so many people are asking for them these days. Self-defense classes are great, but to be honest, if you really want to learn useful self-defense skills and have the body confidence that gives off the “don’t mess with me” signal, an hour or two is not enough. Our rates are super competitive and the first class is free, so check it out if you can. That brings me to the point of this post. We would like to offer 6-month scholarships (10 and possibly more in the future) for a select group of people who cannot afford the membership and would like to offer the first 5 scholarships to members of the LGBTQ+ community. (Other ideas in the pipeline are out-reach to female youth groups and other marginalized groups affected by the current sociopolitical climate)
There are a few requirements:
- A quick application process with short essay submission – just one or two paragraphs about why you want to learn Muay Thai
- Brief explanation of financial hardship
- A face-to-face chat
- Commitment to at least 2 classes per week for the 6-month duration (lots of classes on the schedule to choose from) - We would like to offer this only to people who are really interested to learn and twice a week is the minimum to learn at a good pace
- A great, friendly attitude and ability to have fun!
You don’t need any previous background or experience in martial arts or any sports. Any fitness level welcome – we will get you fit!
